Why God Chose Giving (and Why It Still Matters)

Have you ever wondered why Christian ministry is funded through freewill offerings? It’s not because God lacks the ability to support His ministers in other ways. In fact, He could easily cause every ministry to be self-funded. He could call only the wealthy, or supernaturally supply financial resources for every work He commissions.

But that’s not what He chose.

What If Ministries Didn’t Need Support?

Imagine a world where every church and ministry operated without any financial help from those they serve. Ministry would be something you only observed, not participated in—unless you were called into full-time service. The congregation would become an audience, while only pastors, evangelists, and other fivefold ministers did the “real” work of the Kingdom.

There’d be no partnership, no shared mission, no opportunity for others to invest in what God is doing. Sure, there might be fewer questions and concerns about money—but that setup would not reflect God’s heart.

Why God Chose Giving

God designed it this way—freewill offerings and partnership—because it’s His highest and best plan.

Giving invites everyone to be part of something eternal. Whether you’re a speaker, singer, teacher, or a faithful supporter, you have a part to play. No matter your income, background, or skill set, when you give, you’re bringing your time, your effort, and your life into the work of God. And God sees it.

Ministers can’t do what they do without givers. That’s not a flaw—it’s by divine design. The Kingdom depends on both giving and receiving, creating interdependence between pulpit and pew, clergy and laity.

Giving Makes an Eternal Impact

When you give, you’re turning something temporary—your money—into something supernatural and eternal.

Remember Cornelius in Acts 10? When the angel appeared to him, he said:

“Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.” —Acts 10:4

God remembered his gifts—and He remembers yours too.

In Luke’s Gospel, we’re told about a group of women—Mary, Joanna, Susanna, and others—who supported Jesus out of their own means (Luke 8:2–3). What a legacy: to be remembered as someone who gave to Jesus.

The Apostle Paul also praised the Philippians for their financial partnership:

“No church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only.” —Philippians 4:15

Their generosity wasn’t just appreciated—it was recorded in Scripture.

We Need Each Other

2 Corinthians 9:7 says,

“God loves a cheerful giver.”

It’s true—preachers need givers, and givers need preachers. It’s a divine partnership. Your giving allows ministers like me to give our full time and attention to God’s people. I don’t have to split my energy between a secular job and ministry—I can pour my heart into prayer, teaching, and seeking God, because of your support.

Many days I’m up early praying, and many nights I’m up late writing or studying. And I’m thinking of you. You’re in my prayers continually. Your giving fuels this work.

So thank you—for every love gift, big or small. You are part of what God is doing. And like Paul said to the generous Philippians:

“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” —Philippians 4:19
