How to Exercise Your Spiritual Authority

Do you feel like life is constantly pushing you around? Between the shifting economy, political tension, and personal struggles, it’s easy to feel like a passenger in your own life. But here is the truth: Jesus’ death and resurrection forever changed the balance of power.

You weren’t meant to just “get by.” You were given the right to reign. However, authority is completely ineffective if it is not exercised.

The “Highway Patrolman” Principle

Imagine a highway patrolman sitting in his car. He has the badge, the siren, the radar gun, and the full backing of the state government. If he sits there complaining about speeders but never pulls anyone over, the law isn’t being enforced.

The Governor doesn’t pull cars over; the patrolman does.

In God’s Kingdom, you are on the front lines. God has authorized and deputized you to enforce His will in your life. If you don’t exercise that authority, the enemy will continue to speed right past your boundaries.

3 Keys to Walking in Authority

1. Use Your Keys In Matthew 16:19, Jesus says, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.” Keys represent access and power, but they don’t work if they stay in your pocket. You have to put them in the lock. When you start using the authority Jesus gave you, all of heaven moves to support you.

2. Rule in the Midst of the Mess We often think we can’t be happy until our circumstances change. But Psalm 110:2 tells us to “Rule in the midst of Your enemies!” You don’t have to wait for the “new normal” to go away to find peace. You can feast at the table God prepared for you while the enemy watches from the sidelines (Psalm 23:5).

3. Resistance is an Act of Will James 4:7 doesn’t say to cry, plead, or complain to God about the devil. It says: “Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” * Submission is the foundation.

  • Resistance is the action. The enemy doesn’t always show up with a pitchfork; he shows up as depression, fear, or anger. Identifying these as “trespassers” is the first step to kicking them out.

Stop Giving Him a Seat at the Table

The Apostle Paul gave us a stern warning in Ephesians 4:27: “Nor give place to the devil.” This is a heavy responsibility. It means if the devil has a place in your mind or your home, it’s because it was given to him. Think of it like a rodent infestation: you can hire a professional to clean them out, but if you keep leaving the back door wide open, they will come back with friends.

You have to close the door. You do this by:

  • Guarding your heart: Refusing to accept fear as “normal.”
  • Speaking the Word: Authority is exercised through your words.
  • Taking a Stand: Saying “Enough is enough!” to the works of darkness.

Take Your Life Back

The laws of the Kingdom are written in your Bible. You aren’t making up the rules as you go; you are simply an officer of the Word enforcing what has already been settled in heaven.

Jesus promised in Luke 10:19: “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy…”

Don’t wait for someone else to do it for you. Get your Bible out, declare who you are in Christ, and start enforcing the victory that already belongs to you.
