Bitterness and the Big Picture: How to Live Above Life’s Injustices

In a fallen world, it’s remarkably easy to become bitter. Every one of us has faced the temptation to let a “root of bitterness” take hold after being treated unfairly, overlooked, or hurt. But as we’ve been discussing in our series “Living with No Regrets,” you cannot move forward on the road of life while looking in the rearview mirror.

Bitterness is that rearview mirror. It keeps you trapped in a stew of resentment and regret, robbing you of the joy God intended for you today. If we want to reach our destination, we have to learn how to reject bitterness and replace it with a higher perspective.

Adjusting Your Perspective: The Big Picture

To deal properly with bitterness, we must look at the “Big Picture.” Since the fall of Adam, the world is not as it was designed to be. Injustices abound. People are born into poverty, broken homes, or facing abuse. It is undeniably unfair.

However, consider this: Life is a gift. Despite the circumstances of your birth or the trials you’ve faced, you have the opportunity to know God and live with Him forever. This life is but a “vapor”—a blink of an eye compared to eternity (James 4:14).

When we focus only on the injustices we see now, bitterness grows. But when we focus on the price Jesus paid for our redemption, we realize that every wrong will one day be made right. Don’t allow the temporary struggles of this life to disproportionately impact your soul.

Dealing with Wrongful Treatment

One of the primary sources of bitterness is being wrongfully treated by others. You can’t control what people do to you, but you have total control over how you respond.

The Apostle Paul is a prime example. He was beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, and imprisoned. Yet, he didn’t wear these as scars of bitterness; he wore them as badges of honor. He understood that the more you do for God, the more you become a target for the enemy. But here is a sobering truth: People who become bitter over the trivial things in life cannot be trusted to do great things for God.

When Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown into a dungeon, they didn’t hold a pity party. They sang praises! They chose a currency of blessing over the currency of resentment.

Trading in a Different Currency

When someone lashes out at you with anger or insults, you might feel the urge to “hit back.” But as believers, we don’t carry that currency in our wallets anymore.

I often share the story of traveling to Tanzania. Sometimes I try to pay in local schillings, but all I have are U.S. dollars. Because that is the only currency I have, that is what I give.

As a child of God, you have the nature of God and the love of God abiding in you. Blessing is the only currency you have! When someone gives you an insult, give them back a blessing. It isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of immense spiritual strength.

Live Above the Root

Hebrews 12:15 warns us to look carefully “lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble.” You have the power to stop that root before it breaks the surface. If it’s already there, you have the power—through the grace of God—to uproot it today.

If you are angry or filled with rage because of what life has done to you, you are on the wrong path. Follow Jesus and focus on eternity. The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us (Romans 8:18).

Don’t waste the one life you have by yielding to regret. If you don’t get bitter, you’ll make it!
